[Y-SPACE] Leadership with a heart: A young leader's tale

By Lois Araullo

Being an elected public servant is a big responsibility— we work for the people and our country, the Philippines. As SK officials, we try our best to always be prepared and responsive to the needs of the constituents in our community and we make sure to perform programs and projects especially in the most challenging situations. We receive compliments but also some negative comments and perceptions. Yet, it does not change the fact that we are here for a reason - to lead and to serve.

I started my training as a young leader when I was in high school and it has truly molded my skills and perspectives in terms of helping people, coordinating with your team, and most of all, creating long-term projects for the community. The reason why I am still doing all these initiatives is that I want to make a difference. Despite the huge risks that we face every single day, our sheer desire to help our constituents in the barangay drives us to perform beyond the call of duty. Through the help of my team, we were the first Sangguniang Kabataan officials in Manila who launched a Vertical Garden in our community which aims to promote a healthier and greener vicinity in our barangay. Moreover, we were also able to pioneer a Vitamin C Booster Injection Program for our constituents which is very timely and relevant because of the ongoing pandemic. With all gratitude and humility, these undertakings were also commended by Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso, our City Mayor.

Being a leader is more than just a job. It is not just about initiating short-term projects. It is all about having the vision, showing empathy and leaving a lasting legacy. It is something that you will do not because it is your obligation but for the very reason that it is something your heart chooses— putting the public interests first.

Lois, the SK Chairperson of Brgy. 634 in Manila, is a graduate of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila with a bachelor's degree in Accountancy. She formerly worked as an Audit Associate at Sycip, Gorres, Velayo (SGV) & Company and now working as an Analyst at Shell Business Operations.
